WENDELL PHILLIPS HANDWRITTEN POEM WITH LITHOGRAPH C.1864
- $2K APPRAISAL VALUE
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is an original handwritten poem by famous 19th Century lawyer, reformer and abolitionist, Wendell Phillips. Written with a black ink fountain pen, the poem reads: “ I slept and dreamt that life was beauty, I woke and found that life was duty. Was thy dream then a shadowy lie? Toil on, sad heart, courageously, And then shall find thy dream to be Noonday light and truth to thee.” This piece of memorabilia includes a beautiful oval-shaped black and white lithograph of a portrait of Phillips published by L. Prang & Co. Boston. This piece is in excellent condition and is authenticated by Goodspeed’s Bookstore in Boston.
Wendell Phillips (1811-1884) was an American abolitionist, advocate for Native Americans, orator, and attorney. He became the antislavery movement's most powerful orator and, after the Civil War, the chief proponent of full civil rights for freed slaves. Phillips's other causes included prohibition, women's rights, prison reform, greenbacks, an 8-hour day, and Labor unions. He helped organize the Labor Reform Convention and the Prohibition party in Massachusetts, and both nominated him for governor in 1870.
