- Description
This is a letter from Robert Kennedy imploring the citizens of New York City to nominate Orin Lehman, a candidate for Congress. Lehman served as New York State’s longest-serving commissioner of New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and didn't win the election despite being the Democratic nominee.
Robert Kennedy was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 64th United States Attorney General from January 1961 to September 1964, and as a U.S. Senator from New York from January 1965 until his assassination in June 1968. He was, like his brothers John and Edward, a prominent member of the Democratic Party and has come to be viewed by some historians as an icon of modern American liberalism.
The letter reads as follows:
Dear Friend,
The special congressional election to be held on Tuesday, February 8th will be an important one, because of the unique position the 17th Congressional District occupies, in New york City and in out national life. In Orin Lehman, the Democratic nominee, you have a superbly qualified candidate who will give your District the quality of representation it expects and deserves.
Orin Lehman has been a community leader, and a public servant, of the highest caliber. He has been President of the New York Citizens Committee for Higher Education. He has been active in the cause of civil rights, through leadership positions in the Urban League and the New York State Committee Against Discrimination in Housing. He has been active for 15 years in the reform of the Democratic Party. On a national level, his advice has been sought by President Kennedy and President Johnson at numerous White House conferences, on such subjects as the United Nations, international economic cooperation and rehabilitation.
Orin Lehman would bring to congress an impressive background in te field of foreign affairs, going back to his participation in the early work of the Marshall Plan. As early as 1951, he traveled through Southeast Asia for the government, evaluating out programs there. His recommendations for achieving a solution in Viet Nam have been both courageous and responsible, recognizing as they do that while we mist be convincing in our efforts toward peace negotiations, there are no quick or easy solutions to the complex problems there.
The New session of Congress faces difficult issues of both foreign and domestic policy. Orin Lehman, in my judgment, will approach them responsibly and will speak with an independent and effective voice. New York, and especially the 17thDistrict, should be represented in Congress by men with distinguished credentials, whose work will have an influence on national policy. Orin Lehman is such a man. I hope you will come out to vote on February 8th, and will support him.
Sincerely,
[Robert Kennedy]
