Item Description:
Made by an unidentified artist in the 19th-century Dutch style, this beautiful portrait vividly renders an old man sitting in what appears to be a kitchen. He is using a curved knife to slice a piece of sausage that he holds in his left hand while having a drink on the tabletop, cozily relaxing at midnight, perhaps after a long hard day at work. The choice of subject could be associated with mid-19th century realism; a movement that chose to see and portray the everyday life of the lower class, thus showing the same dignity once used bestowed upon only saints, aristocrats, and kings.
The strong brush strokes give a sense of depth and help blend the different dark and light tonalities characteristic of Baroque painting and the Dutch school. The painting is framed within a beautiful gilded and carved wood baroque style frame from the same period that lightens up the dark-toned portrait. The piece has an illegible signature that roughly reads "J.V. Sherard" on the bottom right and the year 1893.
