This incredibly unique, one-of-a-kind piece of sports memorabilia features the original authentic right-hand wrap used by world-famous boxer George Foreman or "Big George", during the October 30, 1974, fight in Kinshasa, Zaire against 32-year-old Muhammad Ali. George Foreman is a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist. He has gone on to become one of the most popular heavyweights in the history of boxing and was the oldest to ever win a heavyweight championship at the age of 45.
Known as the "Rumble in the Jungle", this legendary boxing match was a historic boxing event in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), on October 30, 1974. Held at the 20th of May Stadium, it pitted the undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman against challenger Muhammad Ali, the former heavyweight champion. The event had an attendance of 60,000 people. Ali won by knockout, putting Foreman down just before the end of the eighth round. It has been called "arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century". The fight is famous for Ali's introduction of the rope-a-dope tactic.
This piece of boxing history is perfectly preserved; it shows light blood stains on the knuckle area and is signed “Foreman vs Ali. October 30, 1974. Zaire, Africa” written by hand in black ink. The hand wrap is professionally framed in a black wooden box with off-white, red and black matts and is framed altogether with an 8’’ x 10’’ gelatin silver black and white print of Ali during the fight.
The story of how we acquired one of the premier relics of boxing history has to do with George Foreman and the owner of a boxing gym in Florida. Foreman did all of his practicing and training at this boxing gym owned by someone who become a very close colleague and friend and refused to accept any form of payment from George for his time spent at the gym. After the 1947 fight, the owner of the gym asked if he could have some mementos of the fight and Foreman gave him his wraps.
George Foreman is one of the most well-known and venerable boxers worldwide. He won Olympic gold in 1968 and powered through boxing's heavyweight division to become world champion in 1973. He returned to the ring after a 10-year hiatus and amazingly became world champion a second time at age 45, before embarking on a successful post-boxing career as a pitchman and entrepreneur.
Muhammad Ali was an American former heavyweight champion boxer and one of the greatest athletes and social activists of the 20th century. An Olympic gold medalist and the first fighter to capture the heavyweight title three times, Ali won 56 times in his 21-year professional career. Ali has also left a grand legacy in social activism and inspires many to this day.
Another memorabilia with a connection to the legendary Ali, Muhammad Ali's "Rumble in the Jungle" WBC title belt was sold for $6.18 million to the Indianapolis Colts owner at a recent auction in July of 2022.
