ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This is a gorgeous late 19th century circa 1870s still life painting. This painting is by John F. Peto (1854-1907), an artist who was recently rediscovered and appreciated for his contribution to American still-life painting. Peto, along with William Harnett are recognized for their skill in 'Trompe-l'œil' style still lifes. Trompe-l'œil is French for deceiving the eye. It is a style of still life painting that uses optical illusions to make the viewer think the items in the painting are real items. This was done, for example, through rarely cutting the depicted objects off the painting. The artist's signature is on the bottom right, in black paint.
