The letter reads as follows:
July 21
Dear Irving [Irving Drutman],
I must make this a hasty one as I have to run over to Metro to find out more about “Give a Girl a Break” which I started last year with Burton Lane and which MGM seems to want finished.
Thanks for the keen “Of Thee” [Of Thee I Sing] explanation. You’re sweet to have bothered but it wasn't important.
Sorry about “Wish you W.H.” [We Wish You Were Here] I hear it's a much better show than it was opening night but the gross in “Variety” for last week didn't promise much hope I'm afraid.
No, at the mo’ [moment] have no plans for going to Europe with “Porgy + B” [Porgy and Bess] Am still not quite over that New Haven flu.
Behrman [?] promised to let me know about the G.G. book when he’d return from abroad but so far nary a word.
Do I know Menotti? But of course, as we say when we imitate a certain French star. Gian Carlo [Gian Carlo Menotti] is a grand guy and we’d love again to have him use our tennis court and join our barbecues. And if you ever shoot pool with him better put cotton in your ears. He can out yell anyone of his singers when he makes a shot. From today on no more throwing money away at the races. The Hollywood meet closed Saturday.
Best,
Ira.
