The Blancpain Brand
In 1735, Jehan-Jacques Blancpain founded the Blancpain brand. His first workshop was in his home located in Villeret, Switzerland. Jehan-Jacques became a pioneer when he created a facility that is one of the oldest watch brands in the world. In 1815, the great-grand-son of Jehan-Jacques, Frédéric-Louis Blancpain, had taken over the family business and decided to modernize production methods. He renovated the traditional workshop into an facility that could produce multiple series of watches. Frédéric-Louis introduced the wheel cylinder escapement. In 1926, Blancpain becomes partners with John Harwood. With Harwood, they presented the first automatic wristwatch. Blancpain then adapts the system to into smaller watches for women to wear just four years later. After two centuries of ownership, in 1932, the Blancpain ownership was transferred to a non-family member, Frederic-Emile, Betty Fiechter and André Leal bought the facility. Blancpain is prominent for being the creator of one of the most complicated mechanical watches ever made. The Blancpain “1735” grand complication includes a minute repeater, tourbillon, perpetual calendar, moon phases and chronograph. A master watchmaker needs a year to assemble this caliber. Blancpin continues to create incredibly timepieces.
