Item Description
This is a Cash Coin recovered in 1895 from the remains of the Honourable East India Company vessel, Admiral Gardner, that wrecked on the Goodwin Sands on January 25, 1809. The Admiral Gardner, the Britannia, and a large brig, Apollo, outward bound, met a tremendous gale and heavy seas which led to the vessel’s demise. A total of 10 lives were lost, both vessels being underwater in 24 hours with no salvage possible.
The East Indiamen (as these vessels were known) were en route to Madras, India with a cargo of 48 tons of HEIC copper coinsspecially minted for the East India Company as well as a quantity of lingots from the Rose Copper Co. of Cornwall, and 1200 tons of iron goods and general merchandise for Bengal. The Admiral Gardner was not insured, the Britannia for about £7,000. Both vessels carried valuable cargoes. The total loss of both was said to be about £200,000.
Copper ingots and coins from the Admiral Gardner represent unique artifacts of what was once the richest, most powerful trading company the world has ever seen. There were two denominations of coins onboard the ship dated 1808, uncirculated, and mostly in mint condition, being packed in wax in small casks. The obverse of the coin portrays the HEIC crest motto under patronage of King and Parliament of England.)
The coin is professionally matted and framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity by Gulfstream Rarities, Inc.
