Antique Victorian Banded Shrub Ceramic Barrel - $5K APR w/CoA
Here we have a charming blue and white banded ceramic barrel from the late 19th century, elegantly adorned with the word "Shrub" across the front. This barrel evokes a period when the term "Shrub" referred to two distinct types of beverages. In 17th and 18th century England, a shrub was a fruit liqueur typically made with rum or brandy, sugar, and citrus juice or rinds. In colonial America, a shrub was a cocktail or soft drink created by mixing a vinegared syrup with spirits, water, or carbonated water. This base syrup, also known as drinking vinegar, was often infused with fruit juice, herbs, and spices, adding complexity to mixed drinks. The barrel is in lovely antique condition, featuring elegant gold bands separating the blue and white sections, and embellished with a delicate gold floral motif on either side of the word "Shrub." Acquired from the now shut down Sherry Lehmann wine store in NYC, this piece not only serves as a beautiful decorative item but also as a fascinating historical artifact, offering a glimpse into the beverage traditions of the past.
