- Description
During World War II, the United States government initiated a variety of restrictions on goods and materials available to the general public. This was done to ensure that essentials such as metal, rubber, and nickel were available for the production of tanks, planes, bullets, and bombs to support the American war effort. The Silver War Nickel represents the standard US nickel issued by the nation for decades prior to World War II. These coins are known as Silver War Nickels because each one contains 35% silver content along with 56% copper and 9% manganese. Due to the need for nickel in armor plating, the federal government ordered the United States Mint in October 1942 to remove all nickel from the 5-cent piece.
All of these 35% Silver War Nickels contain the metallic combination mentioned above and bear individual face values of $.05 (USD). In this listing, your purchase entitles you to a singular package that contains 20 individual Silver War Nickels for a total face value of $1 (USD). The coins in the Silver War Nickel issue typically featured either S mint marks from San Francisco, D mint marks from Denver, or P mint marks from Philadelphia.
On the obverse side of 35% Silver War Nickels is the first portrait of Thomas Jefferson ever used on the nickel. Though Jefferson remains on the circulation nickel to this day, current coinage bears the third portrait of the nations third president. These coins feature the original left-profile portrait designed by Felix Schlag in 1938 when Jeffersons bust replaced the Buffalo Nickel design.
The reverse face of 35% Silver War Nickels include the image of Jeffersons home at Monticello. This design is also the original from 1938 and was also created by Schlag. This design remains on the reverse of the circulation nickel today, with only a two-year gap in 2004 and 2005 for commemorative designs on the reverse.
These 35% Silver War Nickels are a great option for those looking to buy junk silver. The 35% silver content per coni equals out to .0563 Troy oz and is exceedingly affordable as an addition to any investment portfolio.
