Beginning in 2003, the American Silver Eagle coin program began an unprecedented spike in demand and production. The coin series had traditionally experienced peaks and valleys in its production dating all the way back to 1986 when the coins were introduced. The 2004 American Silver Eagle included 8.8 million apr57 specimens and 801,000 proof specimens, for a total production of 9.6 million.

The 2004 Proof American Silver Eagle coins offered through this product listing are considered perfect specimens by the NGC. A coin with a PF70 grade is considered perfect because it has its full, original luster from the mint and no detracting flaws.

Ultra-cameo proofs have a stark contrast in appearance between the design sets and the background field on both sides. The design sets have a strong, frosted finish and the background fields feature deeply-mirrored, clear finishes. The result is a contrast that gives the design the appearance of floating above the coins surface.

On the obverse of the coin is the image of Walking Liberty, which was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. The reverse features the heraldic eagle of the United States, and was created by US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.

American Silver Eagle coins are now produced solely by the West Point Mint, but this was not always the case. Proof specimens were originally struck at the San Francisco Mint, before shifting to the Philadelphia Mint and then on to West Point.
