In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt reached out to Augustus Saint-Gaudens directly to seek his assistance in producing new images for various denominations of American currency. President Roosevelt was seeking to revamp all American denomination designs to reflect the growing stature and cultural growth of the country.

President Roosevelt sought four designs of Liberty from Saint-Gaudens to help replace designs from US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, with two of Saint-Gaudens four designs eventually chosen for the US Eagle denominations of gold coins. His beautiful Liberty image featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933 and was revived in 1986 for the obverse of the American Gold Eagle apr57 coin.
