James Earle Fraser was a native of Winona, Minnesota. His father was an employee of the railroads and often traveled across Minnesota and the Dakotas, exposing Fraser to the culture and lifestyle of various tribes across the American Plains. His design for the US nickel would reflect his upbringing and experiences in the Plains and Midwest of the United States.

Frasers design was approved for the US nickel in 1913 by the administration of President William Howard Taft. The original design included the right-profile bust of a stoic indigenous figure on the obverse with an American bison on the reverse of the coin. This design was used from 1913 to 1938 when it was replaced by the effigy of Thomas Jefferson.

In this right-profile relief, the indigenous leader is depicted with braided hair and feathers woven in his hair. The word Liberty is inscribed on these rounds similar to the original nickel design.
