This is an original color woodblock print by Japanese printmaker Shizuo Ashikaga. With intricate detail this beautiful print renders a close-up shot of a couple of Emerald Pewee on an Azalea tree. The couple of birds stand on the delicate branch; at the end of each branch there are bright pink flowers and green flowers. A Rare Woodblock Print by Shizuo Ashikaga. A male and female Emerald Pewee are perched on an Azalea branch that is in bloom. The colors of the woodblock print are detailed and crisp with excellent registration. The print is in pristine condition and is professionally framed in a green and gold painted wooden frame. It was published by the Uchida Art Co., Ltd. founded in 1919 in Kyoto and the print has the official seals of the publishing company and the artist on the bottom right corner as part of the print.
Shizuo Ashikaga (1917-1991) was a Japanese Woodblock printmaker from the Showa period (1926-1989) Uchida published prints of flowers and birds (kacho-e) in the 1950s by this artist. He was born in 1917 in Ehime Prefecture and graduated from Kyoto Municipal Arts University. One of his teacher was Taikan Yokoyama. He was active as a painter and in restoration works of ancient paintings and temples. The artist died in 1991 in Kyoto.
