Proof American Gold Eagle coins were first offered by the United States Mint in 1986, but there was only a 1 oz gold coin available in that year. Between 1987 and 1988, the US Mint introduced three additional coins. The first of these was the 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.

APR 57 offers these as a random year selection, meaning the date mark on your coin will range from 1988 to 2008 or from 2010 onward. There were no 2009 Proof Gold Eagles issued by the US Mint.

The reverse of 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles includes the design of an American bald eagle family. The design is exclusive to the Gold Eagle series and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek, and features a male eagle flying over the nest as a female guards a hatchling under her wing.
