ITEM DESCRIPTION:
   Here we have an exceptionally rare and unique bottle of Madeira fortified wine, named "Brevoort" by Elbridge T. Gerry. Elbridge Thomas Gerry, often referred to as "Commodore" Gerry, was a prominent American lawyer and reformer, known for his tenure as Commodore of the New York Yacht Club from 1886 to 1892. He was also the grandson of U.S. Vice President Elbridge Gerry, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence.

This particular bottle of Madeira is a true historical treasure. The note in the case reads: "RARE OLD MADEIRA - An incredible perfumey Madeira, imported in the cask for Elbridge T. Gerry in the middle of the 19th century. Bottled and sealed with wax for Mr. Gerry’s own use. The original bottling and seal are intact." The name "Brevoort" likely pays homage to the Brevoort family, a name deeply intertwined with the history of Old New York. Hendrick Janszen, an early settler from the village of Bredevoort in the Netherlands, was one of the founders of what would become the Brevoort legacy in America, a name that carries significant historical weight in the narrative of New York City. The bottle's provenance adds to its rarity and allure. It was acquired from the now-closed Sherry-Lehmann wine store in New York City, a renowned establishment with a rich history of serving wine connoisseurs and collectors.
