THE BEATLES ORIGINAL MEMBER STUART SUTCLIFFE WRITES ABOUT THEIR EARLY DAYS IN HAMBURG - $200K VALUE
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
A fascinating 3-page letter documenting the early days of The Beatles from the perspective of the original bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe. In this letter to his sister, he describes his afternoon at the Kaiserkeller, watching (and criticizing) Rory Storm and the Hurricanes perform with Allen Williams, the Beatles first manager.
He also mentions that with the amount of shows, "all the singers have lost their voices at one time or another, except Paul [McCartney]. At the moment, George [Harrison] is out of action..." Sutcliffe goes on about the abundance of young female fans they have attracted and insists "none of us can be bothered." He then informs his sister she can pick up a copy of Elvis' new album from the Jacaranda and that it is in the care of John's [Lennon] girlfriend.
A remarkable moment for the band on the rise from the perspective of the Fifth Beatle. The timing of this letter is incredible as it intimately describes the pivotal days and weeks leading up to the crystallization The Beatles as we know them today. In the days that followed this correspondence, Sutcliffe meets and becomes engaged to Astrid Kircherr (who spoke almost no English at all) and is eventually encouraged to return to Art School; meanwhile, The Beatles managed to finally secure a drummer by poaching the drummer for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Ringo Starr.
