IRA GERSHWIN LETTER C. 1946 - $10,000 APPRAISAL VALUE!
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is a letter from Ira Gershwin to his friend/colleague Irving Drutman. In his letter he thanks Drutman for records and the stationary he is writing on. Gershwin mentions various projects he was working on such as the movie “Shocking Miss Pilgrim” and his album “Oldies of the Twirling Twenties.” The letter is in excellent condition with no damages and all of the writing completely legible.
Ira Gershwin was an American lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs in the English language of the 20th century. He was a recipient of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for “Of Thee I Sing” and three of his songs were nominated for an Academy Award.
The letter reads as follows:
Jan 3, 1946
Dear Irving,
Many thanks to you (on this fancy paper) for the records which, happily, arrived unbroken. I'm delighted to have them and they go into my album – “oldies of the twirling twenties”. Love it, love it, love it! (also your hand painted holiday card).
We, here, are fine and hope you, there, are fine. Sometime this summer I expect to be there bound. Seems I am going to do a show. Start next month when A. Schwartz [Arthur Schwartz] gets here to tinkle while I twinkle (we hope).
Finished the score of “Shocking Miss Pilgrim” last month and it is now in the shooting. Haven’t seen any rushes as yet but am told all goes well.
Levant [Oscar Levant] lives just a block away. He came looking awfully thin but has gained several pounds in the past few weeks. Also his spirits have improved and he’s in pretty good shape now. June and kids are fine too.
What are you up (or down) to? Did someone tell me you are writing lyrics? And why not? – if you are.
Lee [Lee Gershwin] is off to the races (Santa Anita) today. I went with her yesterday. Not so good. Can’t make a living by losing seven out of eight races – especially when you've got three or four horses in each. But I am not alone in this and the state does get a good rake-off.
Again, thanks – and warmest regards.
Ira
