Through 1982, the RCM struck the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf only, but by November 1982 it was ready to expand the series into fractional-weight offerings as well. From 1979s introduction until 1989, a portrait of the Queen from Arnold Machin dominated the design. That was replaced from 1990 to 2003 by Dora de Pedery-Hunts depiction. Today, coins from 2004 onward have Susanna Blunts design.

The reverse of 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf coins features the same design since introduction. Sugar maple leaf coins are featured on the reverse, along with engravings of the nation of issue, purity, metal content, and weight.
