The Austrian Mint struck the 20 Corona Gold Coins from 1892 until 1916 when the ravages of World War I began to impact demand for gold and the ability of the mint to strike the coins. The popular 20 Corona coins feature pure gold at a level of .900 purity. The coins were known as the Krone in Austria and the Korona in Hungary, though the Hungarian version of the coin had a different bust of Franz Joseph I.
Emperor Franz Joseph I ruled over the Austro-Hungarian Empire for nearly 68 years from the formation of the empire in 1848 when he was just 18 years old until his death in 1916 during the midst of World War I. It was the assassination of his nephew Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand that kicked off World War I and dragged the empire into the calamitous conflict that eventually resulted in its defeat and dissolution.
On the obverse of 20 Corona Austrian Gold Coins is the image of Franz Joseph I. He was crowned as the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary in December of 1848. During his long reign, he also briefly held the title of President of the German Confederation prior to its departure from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and formation of the German Empire.
The reverse face of the coins includes the coat of arms for the Austrian Empire. Based upon the seal of the Hapsburg Dynasty, the double-headed eagle is depicted with a crown clutching the shield of the empire.
