This is an original vintage limited edition pint by prolific artist Jacques Hnizdovsky. This woodcut print depicts the trunk of a majestic Live Oak tree found along the Atlantic coast from southeast Virginia to Florida, west along the Gulf Coast to Louisiana and Mexico, and across the southwest to California. Rich in detail, the strong black lines accentuate the texture of the tree trunk and part of its characteristic Evergreen foliage. This print is number 118 of an edition of 150, is titled, dated and numbered on the outer bottom edge of the plate in pencil and has the artist monogram and year on the bottom edge as part of the plate.
Jacques Hnizdovsky was an Ukranian-American painter, printmaker, graphic designer, illustrator and sculptor. He began his fine arts studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He was classically trained and had a great interest in portraiture, but Hnizdovsky was entirely self-taught in the art of printmaking. Hnizdovsky created hundreds of paintings, pen and ink drawings and watercolors, as well as over 377 woodcuts, etchings and linocuts after his move to the United States in 1949. He was greatly inspired by woodblock printing in Japan as well as the woodcuts of Albrecht Dürer.
