This is an original limited edition print of a portrait of Marilyn Monroe as portrayed in her iconic role in the 1980 film “The Seven Year Itch”. With playful lines, this print depicts the actress as a caricature wearing the iconic white dress, which is regarded as an icon of film history and the image of Monroe in the white dress standing above a subway grating blowing the dress up has been described as one of the iconic images of the 20th century. This print is numbered 29/200 and signed ‘Hirschfeld’ in pencil on the bottom edge of the print, and comes with a certificate of authenticity by George J. Goodstadt Publisher.
Al Hirschfeld combined black and white linear drawing with portraiture to develop one of the most innovative and iconic visual languages. Known as one of the most influential caricaturists in history, Hirschfeld went on to capture countless celebrities and Broadway stars with little more than his expressive black lines. To be the subject of a Hirschfeld drawing endowed one with special distinction. Highly popular with readers of the New York Times, he continued to publish his cartoonish likenesses with them throughout a 75-year career. Hirschfeld’s work has influenced countless artists, illustrators and cartoonists over the years and continues to do so today.
