Here we have an exceptionally rare and historically significant item of ephemera: an 1835 printed copy of the By Laws of the National Guard or Twenty-Seventh Regiment New York State Artillery, adopted April 5, 1827, and printed by Wm. A. Mercin at 240 Pearl Street, New York City. This document provides a fascinating glimpse into the organizational structure and rules governing one of New York’s historic militia regiments during a pivotal period in American history. What elevates this piece beyond its rarity as possibly the only surviving copy is the personal signature of Colonel Emmons Clark, dated 1881.
