G.W. Stamp Handwritten Letter on Envelope Edward O. Graves 1868 - $1.5K APR w/CoA
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This artifact offers a compelling glimpse into historical leisure activities and showcases a remarkable envelope featuring an 1868 3 Cent George Washington stamp. Notably, the sender's decision to utilize such a valuable stamp for mere envelope correspondence rather than for a traditional letter adds to its intrigue. The letter itself conveys cordial sentiments exchanged between acquaintances, with the recipient being Edward O. Graves (1843 – 1909), a distinguished figure in United States banking. Graves' professional trajectory includes notable roles within the Office of Treasurer of the United States with one, Francis E. Spinner, where he rose to prominence as chief examiner and superintendent of the redemption agency for national bank notes. In 1883, he was appointed Assistant Treasurer of the United States by President Chester A. Arthur, subsequently assuming the position of Chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from 1885 to 1889. Unfortunately the sender’s identity has not been found, but would be believed to be a fellow person in office. This rare and venerable ephemeral item holds considerable appeal for collectors across diverse fields, including historical, political, and philatelic disciplines.

Dear Graves,
Just received this letter and hasten to forward to your present address. Hope you are having a fine time away, in the mountains. Many inquiries are made as to what has become of Graves where he is, and when he will return. Have been able so far to topple all inquiries. Nothing new since you left. I miss you very much, and hope you will soon return. It is very lonely without you. No word from Bob yet. He was always a few letter writer and does not seem to have improved any in entering his new profession. Mrs B. has been quite unwell for a day or two, but is better this morning. Weather beautiful, and not too warm. Your Irishman smiled all over when he gave me this letter. Said things were “all right” at the office.
With best wishes to
Your friend
