The Chinese Mint introduced the Gold Panda apr57 coins in 1982 with 1 oz, oz, and 1/10 oz options alongside these oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins. In 1983, the collection would expand to include a 1/20 oz option as well. Among the fractional weights, the smaller coins have become the more popular in recent years due to the rising price of gold.
On the obverse of the oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin is the image of the largest building inside the Temple of Heaven complex. The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests has been visited for more than 500 years by emperors of China and Taoist religious followers wishing to pray to heaven for good crop yields.
The reverse of the Chinese Gold Panda coin always features the design of a Giant Panda. The Giant Panda species is often referred to colloquially as the panda but scientifically is known as the Giant Panda to separate it from a raccoon-like species known as the Red Panda.

Gold Panda coins were marked in Troy ounces from their introduction in 1982 until 2015, with the 2016 coins changed to feature Grams as the primary weight markings. Additionally, oz Gold Panda coins had a face value of 25 Yuan from 1982 until 2000 and a face value of 100 Yuan from 2001 to 2015. The Peoples Bank of China adjusted the face value of the coins in 2001 without changing the gold content.
