The Morgan Silver Dollar was released during one of the most eventful periods in the history of US currency. It was produced by the United States Mint from 1878 to 1904 with one more year of production in 1921. Because these coins were minted prior to the 1965 cessation of silver coinage, they were composed from 90% pure silver. Their unique mintage year also makes them the first silver dollars to be released after the Coinage Act of 1873 caused the value of silver to drop to an unprecedented low.
Each Morgan Silver Dollar featured in this collection has been assigned an MS64 (Mint State 64) grade by the NGC (Numismatic Gauranty Corporation). An MS64 grade indicates that the coin has a worn, but acceptable appearance. Coins with this grade will display several clusters of hairline marks as well as a number of light contact marks. To prevent any further deterioration, all coins will arrive in their individually sealed NCG slabs.
Prominently displayed on the front of this silver dollar is George T. Morgans rendition of Lady Liberty. In this portrait, Liberty is turned in profile with her hair styled in loose ringlets. She is also depicted wearing a variety of different headpieces including a laurel wreath, a pileus and an engraved headband. Surrounding her portrait are a series of thirteen stars, which pay tribute to the original thirteen colonies. They separate the phrase E Pluribus Unum, from the mintage year of the coin.
The reverse side of the coin offers Morgans interpretation of the heraldic eagle. As with previous versions, the eagle is featured with its wings outstretched and its talons clasped around an olive branch and a set of arrows. However, Morgan chose to incorporate an open wreath as an additional design element underneath the eagle. Encircling the eagle is a ring of text bearing our nations name along with the coins denomination. A final inscription of In God We Trust is featured above the eagles head.
With its unique background and stunning design, the Morgan Silver Dollar is as rich in history as it is in artistry.
