C.1800’s Cabinet Card With 1776 Georgia Spanish Milled Dollar On Back - $10K APR w/CoA

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here we have an exceptionally rare and unique piece of historical ephemera: a cabinet card dating from what appears to be the mid-19th century. Measuring approximately 5.5” H x 2.5” W, the card features a photograph that seems to depict members of a fraternity, club, or other formal organization. The image provides a glimpse into mid-1800s social life, with individuals dressed in period attire. The reverse of this cabinet card transforms it into a truly extraordinary artifact. Affixed to the back is an original colonial-era banknote from Georgia, issued in 1776 during the early days of the American Revolution. This rare Spanish Milled Dollar note bears the signatures of several prominent figures in Georgian and Revolutionary history, including Lachlan McGillivray, Edward Telfair, William Stephens, William Ewen, and William O’Bryen. These signatories played pivotal roles in the governance and development of the Georgia colony and the fledgling United States. Lachlan McGillivray was a wealthy Scottish trader and father to Creek leader Alexander McGillivray. Edward Telfair later became a Governor of Georgia and a signer of the Articles of Confederation. William Stephens, William Ewen, and William O’Bryen were significant figures in Georgia's colonial and revolutionary history, contributing to the establishment of the state’s independence. This combination of a 19th-century photographic relic and a historically significant piece of 18th-century currency creates a remarkable artifact that bridges two transformative periods in American history. The banknote itself is highly collectible, not only for its age and scarcity but also for the notable figures associated with it. Its survival in such a state, affixed to a later cabinet card, adds to the intrigue and uniqueness of this item. This extraordinary piece is perfect for collectors of Americana, early photography, or Revolutionary War-era currency and memorabilia, offering a tangible link to the history of Georgia and the United States as a whole.
