IRA GERSHWIN HAND-WRITTEN LETTER 1955 - $10,000 APPRAISAL VALUE!
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This letter from Ira Gershwin to Irving Drutman was written on Gershwin’s personal stationary. It discusses his travel plans as well as some information regarding Gershwin’s biography, written by David Ewen. Gershwin is very informal in his letter, since it is just correspondence between two friends. The letter is in excellent condition, with no flaws or marks and all of the writing is legible.
Ira Gershwin was an American lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs in the English language of the 20th century. He was a recipient of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for “Of Thee I Sing” and three of his songs were nominated for an Academy Award.
The letter reads as follows:
December 4, 1955
Dear Irving,
Just a quick note to tell you Lee [Lee Gershwin] left this morning for N.Y. and will be at The Gotham [hotel] for a few family-and-friend-seeing days—then off to Berlin, and next stop, Leningrad.
Me, I’m not one for below-zero weather but I am planning to make the Moscow opening; at the mo’ [moment] that’s slated for Jan, 10th, and ill prob. [probably] fly directly from L.A. by S.A.S. [Scandinavian Airlines]
As for Ewen [David Ewen] and his biog. [biography] –I didn't have much to do with it. He did try to do a good job and I imagine he’s succeeded in a popular sort of way: actually I haven’t seen what he’s finally arrived at but I don't doubt that it’ll be a big seller for him. Feb., I think, is the date.
