- Description
This is a medium sprung rocking horse, circa 1910, attributed to Jessie Crandall, the carved wood rearing horse painted in light beige with black iron eyes, braided horsehair mane and tail, leather cloth saddle and harness over size rear legs mounted via large double springs to painted wood stand with turned spacers. The horse is in overall good condition showing some signs of age and wear in the paint work and leather that can be easily restored.
Jesse Crandall was a prolific inventor and toy maker based in New York City in the 1850-70s. He made several designs based on coiled flat springs between 1859 and 1870. He is credited for inventing the Shoo-fly design of the rocking horse in 1859 and in 1861 he was issued a patent for a spring-loaded rocking horse.
