Lot of Four Handmade Sterling Silver Franklin Mint Ships 1976 - $10K APR w/CoA
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Presented here are four exquisite handmade sterling silver ship silhouettes crafted by Franklin Mint, each possessing its own unique historical significance and maritime legacy.
The Schooner Yacht America holds a significant place in maritime history as the 19th-century racing yacht that clinched the inaugural America's Cup international sailing trophy. On August 22, 1851, the America secured victory in the Royal Yacht Squadron's prestigious regatta around the Isle of Wight, triumphing by a remarkable 18-minute margin.
The Frigate La Belle Poule, a Surveillante-class 60-gun first rank frigate of the French Navy, was constructed in 1932. This illustrious vessel gained renown for its pivotal role in transporting the remains of Napoleon from Saint Helena back to France, an event immortalized as the Retour des cendres.
The Nao Santa Maria, originally named La Gallega, was the largest of the three ships utilized by Christopher Columbus in his historic first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. Under the command of Juan de la Cosa, she played a pivotal role in shaping the course of history.
The Clipper Ship Cutty Sark, a British clipper ship, holds a storied history as one of the last tea clippers to be constructed and one of the fastest vessels of its time. Built in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line in Dumbarton, Scotland, the Cutty Sark symbolizes the culmination of design advancements in clipper ships before steamships supplanted their routes. Its name is derived from the short shirt worn by the fictional witch in Robert Burns' poem "Tam o' Shanter," published in 1791.
