Original Currier & Ives Joseph Koehler Lithograph C.1900’s - $10K APR w/CoA
Currier & Ives, a New York-based printmaking firm founded by Nathaniel Currier and James Ives, operated from 1835 to 1907. Known for making art accessible through affordable lithographic prints, they captured significant events and popular culture. Their "Darktown Comics" series, launched in 1870, became a major success, comprising nearly a third of their production at its peak.
The series, featuring nearly 200 different cartoons produced in tens of thousands of copies, depicted a fictional Black American town using negative stereotypes and exaggerated caricatures. Primarily illustrated by Thomas Worth, with some contributions from John Cameron, the series remained popular for nearly 20 years. Although Currier & Ives ceased operations in 1907, the "Darktown Comics" continued. The lithographic stones used for the series were sold to New York printer Joseph Koehler, who reproduced the prints for several more years.
