by Edward McCluney, 1970's - $2,000.00 value

Item Description

"Mower" by the famous Edward McCluney belongs to a limited series of 260 prints. The current lithograph is numbered 59 out of the 260. It depicts a rusting mower locked in sand. This iconic symbol of the decay of the American way of life is one of Edward McCluney's most collectable graphic works. McCluney achieves unique textural effects through the combination of the difficult soft ground etching technique with traditional line etching and aquatint. The artist generally works on a wide spectrum of different themes and subjects. His artistic influences are mainly Alex Jackson, Jack Coughlin, and Gabor Peterdi.

An important Afro-American printmaker, in the early 70s, McCluney taught drawing and printmaking for the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts in Boston. For 17 years McCluney also served as a distinguished and influential Professor in Printmaking at MIT. Following a one-person exhibition at the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists in l973, the museum acquired a collection of McCluneys' etchings: McCluney had a long history with the National Center of Afro-American Artists, where as an artist in residence in printmaking, he created his Nine American Masters Series. In addition to MIT, McCluney taught at the University of Mass, The Mass. College of Art and Virginia State College. His etchings are represented in numerous private and public collections: The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has exhibited his prints.

The etching was made using black ink and aquatint on cream woven paper. The art piece is pencil signed, titled and numbered on the bottom. The overall size of the framed and matted lithograph is roughly 23" x 21" inches, the silver frame is almost 0.3" inches wide. The etching itself, without the frame and matting is approximately 18" x 16" inches.
